Abstract: A Canadian health economic analysis of reduced healthcare utilization with 100% whey, peptide-based formulas versus standard formulas in home enteral nutrition (Canadian Nutrition Society Annual Conference, 2026)
This 2026 analysis using Canadian healthcare costs showed that among HEN patients who are at risk of enteral nutrition intolerance, 100% whey, peptide-based formulas were associated with fewer healthcare visits and hospital admissions, and reduced costs compared to standard polymeric formulas. From a clinical perspective, these findings suggest that for patients at high risk of gastrointestinal intolerance, there may be value in considering whey peptide–based formulas earlier—either as an upfront choice or as an early switch when symptoms emerge—to optimize patient outcomes and healthcare resource use.
